Search Engines and Directories

Assembled below is a collection of search engines and directories with which to find anything on the web. Each month the Martex site editor will designate one particular search service as "search of the month".

Open Directory Project

search of the month (March 2001)

This directory is maintained by an army of over 22,000 editors and now lists over 1,800,000 web sites. Amongst others, the following web portals use Open Directory data as part of their search solutions:

Dmoz: http://dmoz.org
Google: http://www.google.com
AOL: http://www.aol.com
AltaVista: http://www.altavista.com
Lycos: http://www.lycos.com
Direct Hit: http://www.directhit.com
Ask Jeeves: http://www.ask.com
HotBot: http://www.hotbot.com
Netscape Netcenter: http://www.netscape.com
Dogpile: http://www.dogpile.com

Yahoo!

The most widely used worldwide directory and still one of the best. Yahoo UK & Ireland indexes results according to their geographical origins with UK and Ireland domains first. If the directory doesn't have what you want, a backup search using Google is there to help.

Search MSN

From Microsoft a revised search facility, partly powered by LookSmart.

UK Plus

UK sites only from Associated, the people responsible for the London Evening Standard amd the Daily Mail.

Northern Light

Reputedly the largest repository of web pages on the web, this site uniquely features a magazine and newspaper articles resource, giving it a different feel to the portals. Especially worth a visit if you are looking for research material or obscure subject matter.

Business.com

Specifically business.

SearchUK

Listing UK domains only.

Euroferret

From Muscat comes this, the largest collection of European domains (over 30 million) on the web. They say.

UK Max

Neat UK engine.

Excite

See also the tiny Webcrawler engine and the now-defunct Magellan, both owned by Excite. There is also a UK subsidiary. None of these are as useful as they once were and are rarely updated.

Deja

Deja lists newsgroups from usenet.
